Designed by Papersmiths: The Pocket Pencil

Five years in the making, the Pocket Pencil was designed to solve a very specific problem: how to always have a proper pencil to hand, without ever feeling like you’re carrying one.

Tiny pencil. Serious design.

Precision-made in Japan by the same specialist factory behind our Everyday Pen and Primo Pen, it’s a micro-sized mechanical pencil that’s almost invisibly lightweight. At just 105mm long and weighing only 2.7g, it slips into pockets, pouches and notebook bands so easily you’ll forget it’s there - until you need it.

The body is crafted from smooth incense cedar, chosen for its lightness and natural feel, and finished with finely machined brass details that give just enough weight and balance in use. A high-tension SK-grade steel clip keeps it securely in place, while the brass knock and taper add a quiet sense of precision.

A note from the Founder.

The Pocket Pencil has been five years in the making.

I’ve wanted to create a Papersmiths pencil for a long time - something tiny, well-made and genuinely useful - but like most small businesses, we’ve had to prioritise carefully.

Other products needed to come first, and this one stayed quietly on the list until the timing (and budget) felt right. When we finally returned to it, the brief was clear. I wanted a pencil that could live with you every day without asking for attention - or poking you. Something so lightweight you’d barely notice it in your pocket, pouch or notebook band, yet still satisfying to use when you reach for it.

We worked with our long-standing Japanese manufacturing partners - the same specialist factory behind our Everyday Pen and Primo Pen - to refine the scale, materials and balance. The incense cedar body keeps it featherlight, while the brass details and steel clip give it just enough structure and precision. It’s deliberately small, refillable, and unfussy. A simple tool, designed properly. I’m honestly so excited to finally share it.
